When Master Carver Peter Calvesbert surfs the web, he typically ends up on sites like www.National Geographic.com. Here, he recently saw a python that had swallowed a sheep and was blocking a road! Another picture showed a Burmese python that had apparently burst while swallowing a two meter alligator. Interestingly, snakes do not chew their food. Instead, they have very flexible lower jaws and skull joints which allow them to open their mouths wide enough to swallow prey whole, even if it is larger in diameter than the snake itself. Occasionally, snakes have been known to die from trying to swallow an animal that is too big. In “Big Gulp”, a very rare Small Treasure Jest with a worldwide edition of only 200, Peter has taken snakes’ unusual digestion to the extreme! The interior fish, and the February date inscription commemorate the first trout that Peter caught, after receiving fly-fishing lessons for his birthday.
