In September 2005, the House of Peers hosted a Harmony Kingdom convention in Seattle. Master Carver Peter Calvesbert sculpted a convention exclusive pelican piece for the event. For the event, he had also begun a puffin piece, but inspiration took a nose dive, not unlike the way these sea birds search for food. After a year, Peter was intrigued to see how the puffin would have turned out so back to it he went. What emerged was “Rock Star” – in all of its pride and glory. Within the box figurine are three fish (the puffin’s lunch), and a sign that reads “Puffin Island”. This is a small island off Anglesey, which itself is a small island off Wales, where Peter recently vacationed with his family. At one time, puffins bred on the island in considerable numbers with up to 2000 pairs recorded, but with the accidental introduction of the brown rat, the population was reduced to no more than 30 pairs. A rat poisoning program started in 1998 and more puffins are beginning to emerge. |
