Master Carver Peter Calvesbert frequently consults The Guinness Book of Animal Facts and Feats, his “gold mine of useless information”. In the pig section, he read about a sow which “threw” 34 piglets. This set him off thinking what chaos feeding time must have been. “Mother Load” portrays a resigned mum in such a situation. Peter couldn’t quite carve 34 piglets into his model, running out of room at 22 (we think). “Hogzilla”, inscribed on the lid, references a 12-foot-long wild hog that is part of local legend in small towns across Southern Georgia. The owner claims that the hog, now deceased, weighed 1,000 pounds. A second inscription, “Anne Langton”, refers to a collector who has amassed the largest pig collection in the UK, according to said Guinness record book. Within the sow sculpture are sausages, each inscribed with the name of a well-known pig from film or literature. |
