This box figurine portrays a rhino protecting its calf. These peaceful, timid, solitary animals produce a single offspring after a gestation of 15–18 months, and the child may stay with its mother for more than two years. For centuries, people have believed that the horn of a rhino is a symbol of virility and potency. It is for this reason that they have been mercilessly hunted. Although the rhinoceros is a protected animal, four of the five species are nearing extinction. Its horn, which is really comprised of stiffly matted hair, is used in artistic carvings, as talismanic handles for ceremonial knives, and most commonly, ground into powder and added to medicines and aphrodisiac drinks. Thus, it is that the invention of Viagra might do more for the conservation of the species than any International Treaty. 130 carved into the lid lip signifies that this is carver David Lawrence’s 130th piece for Harmony Kingdom. He says that his signature acorn is carved on the piece, but it is well-concealed! |
