The 2009 Black Box, “Club Kids”, examines the practice of seal hunting. Every year, thousands of seals are “culled” to keep their population down. Meanwhile, the human population grows by over 200,000 a day. In typical Black Box fashion, Peter turns the tables and the seals now do the clubbing. Inscribed on the lid are the nations responsible for most seal killing: Canada, Russia, Norway, Greenland and Namibia. “Hakapik” is the traditional weapon used to dispatch a seal and is considered a very efficient tool. “Nov15 – May15” references Harp Seal hunting season. The interior shows a harp, because it is mostly Harp Seals that are culled and harps are connected to the place the seals will go. . . heaven. |
