The image of Ganesha is one of the most distinctive within Hinduism. Ganesha is the God of Knowledge, with large elephant ears connoting knowledge through listening and a large head symbolizing knowledge through reflection. The two tusks, one whole and the other broken, relates to the existence of perfection and imperfection in the physical world. Ganesha’s large belly reflects the ability to digest whatever experiences life brings. The deity is shown with one leg on the ground and the other folded as if meditating, this to mean a balance between the practical and spiritual life. Ganesha is portrayed with four arms, symbolizing the four Vedas, the four aims of Hinduism and the four stages of life. The fourth palm is also extended to bless devotees. In his hands Ganesha holds a rope to carry devotees to the truth and an iron hook to represent the need to control desires. His trouser pockets bulge with coins to reward devotees. He also has a bowl of sweetmeats (laddoo), signifying earthly prosperity and wellbeing. Ganesha’s companion is a mouse, chosen for its ability to gnaw through barriers. Sculptor Ann Richmond has included a calendar reading 1947, the year of India’s independence. “4izzy” is a reference to Ann’s new granddaughter. And Rufus, the cheeky hare seen in some of Ann’s Picturesque tiles, makes reappearance.
